Benjamin Perry’s Platform for Coquitlam
Growth that Works for Residents
As the city grows, community benefit should be the main consideration. With every decision, we should be asking whether we are making life better for existing residents.
New zoning and new housing should meet identified community needs and be matched by roads, schools, parks, medical space, childcare and other services. Towers should be around SkyTrain stations, while other neighbourhoods can add housing in ways that make gradual changes to their density and character.
Safer Streets and Managed Traffic
People do not feel safe on streets that are becoming busier as we densify. There is a need for more enforcement, particularly of traffic rules, better pedestrian infrastructure in problem areas, and safer walking and cycling routes.
We also need explicit transportation plans before zoning for more density.
A Green and Liveable City
The people of Coquitlam love the trees, streams and parks within our city. We need strong protection for natural habitat, more green space and better protection for the mature trees of our urban forest.
We also need climate-resilient infrastructure, lower emissions and access to cooling for all residents as the climate changes.
Keeping Coquitlam Affordable
Affordability means different things to different people. Continuing to support housing supply is important, but we should require more family-sized and below-market units.
We should also zone for some of the most affordable forms of new housing, including medium-density apartment buildings. Renters need stronger protections, while homeowners need accountability and transparency as we work to keep property-tax increases as low as possible.
