Putting residents first as Coquitlam grows
Coquitlam is one of the fastest-growing cities in British Columbia. Growth can bring new homes, jobs, and opportunities, but it should never come at the expense of the people who already call our neighbourhoods home.
I believe the success of new development should be measured by one simple question:
Does it make life better for Coquitlam residents?
That means planning for the services and infrastructure our communities need, listening to residents before major decisions are made, and ensuring that growth improves quality of life rather than putting additional pressure on roads, schools, parks, and neighbourhoods.
My Priorities:
Put residents first
Development decisions should be made with the needs of residents as the only priority. The demands of other levels of government and special interests should not be the main consideration.
Build complete communities
Major development should contribute to the community by providing space for services that residents need, including medical clinics, childcare, parks, and affordable housing.
Put density in the right places
Higher-density development makes the most sense where it is well-served by rapid transit, particularly around SkyTrain stations, while protecting neighbourhoods that are already delivering affordable housing and community.
Listen before making major changes
Residents deserve meaningful opportunities to shape significant redevelopment proposals before important decisions are made.
Link growth with schools and infrastructure
Population growth should be coordinated with provincial planning for schools and other essential public infrastructure so that services keep pace with new development.
Transportation planning must come before development
If the transportation network cannot support the proposed density, it should not be approved.
Demand accountability
I will advocate for greater accountability and cost control from Metro Vancouver and support responsible financial management throughout local government.
Protect neighbours during construction
Construction is part of a growing city, but residents living nearby deserve strong enforcement of bylaws related to noise, traffic, dust, safety, and other impacts.
